G124 is Senator Renzo Piano’s working group focused on the suburbs and the city.
Since becoming a Senator for life in 2013, architect Renzo Piano has donated his salary to the “mending” (rammendo) of Italian suburbs, giving groups of young architects and designers in various cities across Italy the opportunity each year to take part in this major collective project.
The suburb chosen by Rome’s G124 group is Montespaccato, located on the city’s western edge.
Isolated in part by the Tenuta di Acquafredda Nature Reserve and the Grande Raccordo Anulare, Montespaccato has long faced challenges related to urban isolation and social issues, including a history of organized crime and neglect. However, in recent years, collaborative efforts between public institutions and the local community have made Montespaccato one of Rome’s most successful examples of urban regeneration.
In this context, the Rome G124 chapter developed design strategies to support Montespaccato’s ongoing transformation. Recognizing the inhabitants’ needs and the complex, unplanned urban fabric, we proposed a mirrored system of public “squares”, one open, one covered, within a larger sports complex. This intervention is designed to provide flexible spaces for community activities and to establish a new, positive identity for the neighborhood.
Prototypes
As the product and prototyping expert for the Rome G124 group, I was responsible for constructing detailed architectural models that translated our ideas into tangible form. Using 3D printing, laser cutting, and other digital fabrication methods, I created multiple physical prototypes that enabled our team and local stakeholders to visualize, test, and refine our design proposals. The following gallery showcases a selection of these models, underlining the critical role of hands-on prototyping in the design and communication process.
